Have you set your 2008 goals?

We are into February already and a good time to quickly review your goals and see if you are on track. If you have not set yourself some goals then you still have time to do
that.

Reflect for a moment and ask yourself the following
questions:

-Are my goals inspirational?
-Do they focus on my priority areas?
-Will they help me become a better person?
-Will they enable me to get closer to where I want to be
long term?

If you have not already done so then evaluate all areas of
your life. Reflect on your gaps and where would
you like to be. Then use this knowledge to write down a few
goals.

Stretch and push yourself during this exercise. Dont set
run-of-the-mill goals.

Goal setting does not have to be complicated. Keep it simple
and that way you will be able to achieve them.

Have you written your performance review?

It's almost year end and if you have not already written your part of the performance review then get it done quickly.

This is important if you have to submit your draft review to your manager.

Spend some quality time writing your draft. Review and polish it over a day or two. And, don't forget to include your achievements and what you learnt during the year.

What to focus on your year-end review

As you start getting ready for your performance review think about what you want to get out from it?

Begin with the end in mind...as Stephen Covey would say it.

Do you want to get great feedback on how you performend during the year?

Do you want to know your strengths and areas of opportunities? Would you like to get advice from your manager on what you can do to improve yourself?

These are all very useful questions to reflect upon...and use the responses to be better prepared for the discussion.

Are you true to yourself?

I had this situation at work this week where my best employee had two job offers -

1) a promotional opportunity in my own department with more pay & benefits and ability to work as an expat in an international location; and

2) a promotional opportunity in another department, lesser benefits compared to the expat postion, but with the ability to stay more close to her family.

As a manager I could have forced her to stay. In fact, I developed her so that she could take over from me.

Yet, I encouraged her to choose her own calling and be true to herself.

Which offer do you think she took?

As it turned out, she took the one with the lesser benefits because her family was more important to her.

She was true to herself. And, I think she had to be brave to make this decision.

I am stuck but happy for her.

How many times in life have you faced a similar situation? Where you are trying to please others.

Have you been true to yourself lately?
